Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (5 Ağustos 1850 - 6 Temmuz 1893) 19. yüzyıl Fransız yazarı, kısa öykü formunun ustası olarak hatırlanıyor ve natüralist ekolün temsilcisi olarak, insan yaşamlarını, kaderlerini ve sosyal güçleri hayal kırıklığına uğramış ve genellikle karamsar terimlerle tasvir ediyordu.

Maupassant, Gustave Flaubert'in bir koruyucusuydu ve hikayeleri, stil ekonomisi ve verimli, görünüşte zahmetsizce dénouements (sonuçlar) ile karakterize edilir. Birçoğu, savaşın yararsızlığını ve kendi kontrolleri dışındaki olaylara kapılan masum sivilleri, deneyimleriyle kalıcı olarak değiştirilen 1870'lerdeki Fransa-Prusya Savaşı sırasında geçiyor. 300 kısa öykü, altı roman, üç seyahat kitabı ve bir cilt mısra yazdı. İlk yayınlanan öyküsü "Boule de Suif" ("Dumpling", 1880), genellikle onun başyapıtı olarak kabul edilir.
